Saddleworth Community Hydro Scheme to power 70 homes by end of year

This looks like an amazing community hydro scheme – harnessing the “compensation water” that flows continuously out of the Dovestone Reservoir into Chew Brook, to feed enough power into the National Grid to heat and light around 70 homes.

A cross flow turbine will generate the electricity.

Power should start to flow in the National Grid by the end of 2013. More info here.

This project has taken six years from inspiration to estimated time of completion.
