House of Lords averts Farmageddon

Last week the House of Lords voted to put on hold the ConDem government’s plan to abolish the Agricultural Wages Board (AWB). They intend to scrutinise the proposal, which would open the door for supermarkets and agribusinesses to cut farm workers’ already low wages.

Unite, the Trade Union, said,

“There is still time to mobilise enough parliamentary support to halt the AWB’s abolition which has set agricultural workers’ pay since the Second World War.”

If you think farm workers’ wages and dangerous working conditions need protection by the AWB, you can let your MP know that you want the AWB to continue.
