Green Party Public Meeting, Dec 3rd in Hebden Bridge: Fighting for Fairness

At a public meeting on 3rd December in Hebden Bridge Town Hall, Shan Oakes – one of the Green Party’s Prospective European Parliamentary Candidates for Yorkshire & Humber – will speak on Fighting for Fairness: from Local to Global.

All are welcome at the 7.30pm meeting in the HB Town Hall Terrace Room. Calderdale Green Party is organising the meeting.

People who are attending the Planning Committee meeting at 6pm in Halifax Town Hall may be able to get back to Hebden Bridge in time for this meeting, if they’re so inclined.

Here’s the Green Party info about Shan Oakes:

Shan Oakes was a Green candidate in the last European Elections in 2009, when the Green Party narrowly missed getting its first Green MEP in the Yorkshire and Humber area. Based in Beverley, she previously stood for Parliament in 2008 in the Haltemprice and Howden ‘civil liberties’ by-election, where she came second. She stood in H&H again in 2010.

Shan works full time for justice – justice for people and for planet. She is director of an educational trust working locally and nationally.

Shan has previously been:

  • an English teacher in secondary schools in Hull and East Riding
  • a senior officer in local government, working in education and community safety, promoting equality and inclusion
  • working with voluntary groups and aid agencies in Uganda

Shan runs an eco-friendly holiday house in York to finance her campaigns. She has lived in Beverley and York since 1975. She is married, has two sons living in the region, and, recently, grandchildren.

Shan is currently serving on the Green Party’s national executive as Equality and Diversity Co-ordinator.
