GMB northern region welcome June 18th briefing from chemicals industry on fracking in Newcastle Upon Tyne

Following the GMB’s 8th June fracking charter with Offshore Gas and Oil Trade Association, on 18th June GMB Northern Region issued a press release welcoming a briefing on fracking from the Chemical Industry Association. Here it is:

Given the fragility of the oil and gas sector due to price pressures, diversification through shale gas could well become a key employer within the energy sector says GMB Northern Region.

GMB agrees shale gas charter with UK Offshore Oil and Gas Trade Association

Here is a press release from the GMB about its new charter with Offshore Oil and Gas, which describes itself as:

“the leading representative body for the UK offshore oil and gas industry.”

Overwhelmingly positive support again from public for second NHS strike at Calderdale Royal Hospital

There was a good turn out at the Calderdale Royal Hospital NHS staff strike picket on the frosty morning of Monday 24th November.

Unlike the first NHS staff strikers’ picket a few weeks ago, NHS staff and supporters only picketed the main hospital entrance on Dryclough Lane this time.

Mick Coughlan, a member of staff at Calderdale Royal Hospital, said,

“As a member of UNISON I’m taking part in industrial action in protest at the decision by the Lib Dem/Conservative government’s decision not to implement the independent pay review body’s recommendation to give NHS staff a 1% pay rise. This must be contrasted with the MP’s pay review body suggestion of 11% for them being accepted. All in it together?”

Excellent public support for striking #NHS staff in #Calderdale and #Huddersfield

The entrances to Calderdale Royal Hospital were picketed by striking NHS staff this morning between 7-11am, with many passing cars honking their horns in support.

Members of Unison, Unite, GMB and the Royal College of Midwives stood in the rain handing out leaflets, to explain that years of frozen pay and deteriorating working conditions are making it impossible to retain staff and to care properly for patients. Continue reading

ConDems public spending cuts mean 23.4% of Calderdale Council staff have lost their jobs

Office of National Statistics data  show that 31,800 Yorkshire and Humberside Council employees  lost their jobs between the first quarter of 2010 and the third quarter of 2012. This is 13.1% of the total Council workforce in the region.

Calderdale Council job losses over this time were even worse – 23.4% of  Calderdale Council employees lost their jobs. Staff numbers fell from  9,869 in the first quarter of 2010 to  7,564 in the third quarter of 2012.
